Fire Safety Day 2025: Preventing Fire With Knowledge and Stopping Fire With Courage

Fire Safety Day is an annual program at Little Caliphs Kalam Khalifah where we invite local firefighters to teach the students and teachers the essentials in fire safety. Furthermore, this collaboration allows our students to automatically become members of the Kelab Keselamatan Kebakaran Kanak-Kanak, a club focusing on teaching fire safety to young children. The day began with the teachers giving the students a briefing on what firefighters do (hint: they don’t only fight fires!). These heroes are also responsible to help civilians in other emergency cases and help catch wild animals such as snakes. Next, the students had the opportunity to listen to a briefing from the firefighters. The firefighter visiting our Tunjong branches specifically highlighted the dangers of playing with sprinklers, fireworks (bunga api) and oil lamps (pelita) during Eid Fitri celebration!

Briefing Session

But what to do if you’re ever caught on fire? (Na’uzubillah). In any emergency cases, the very first thing to do is remove yourself from the dangerous situation and alert others. Yell out “Fire! Fire! Fire!” After that, to smother the fire, you must Stop, Drop and Roll. Keep rolling back and forth with your hands covering your face until the fire dies. The students practiced these steps together (minus the fire, of course) with supervision from the professionals.

What to do when caught on fire:

1. Remove self from danger and alert others
2. Stop and cover your face
3. Drop and proceed to lie down
4. Roll around until the fire stops

Another exciting activity during the Fire Safety Day is the demonstrations on different scenarios and ways to stop a fire; either by stopping the gas leak from the pipe on the gas canister using just your thumb, smothering the fire using a huge wet towel, or using the fire extinguishers. With safety protocols in place, the firefighters assisted the teachers in trying these methods themselves to make sure that they are ready whatever comes their way to protect the students. To see how our teachers did in these demonstrations, head on over to our YouTube channel!

How to use a fire extinguisher:
1. Twist and pull out the safety pin
2. Test if the fire extinguisher is still working
3. Aim towards the source of fire while maintaining a 3–5m distance
4. Spray in a zig-zag motion until the fire completely dies

Thank you Firefighters!

To further immerse the students in the role of firefighters, they put on the firefighter costumes and got to ride on the fire trucks for some photos. The students had a blast meeting the firefighters and we would like to thank everyone for making this day memorable for all of them. Your bravery is something that should be applauded and we hope our students take inspiration from it.

Lastly, before the day ended, the students engaged in several games that are appropriately themed to fit Fire Safety Day. They “stopped fires, saved animals from tall trees, crawled under the smoke, and balanced themselves on a beam towards safety.” All of these activities were designed not only to stimulate their imagination but also to help develop their gross motor skills in a fun, creative way. Even on a day filled with play, we don’t forget to make sure our students learn a lot and are able to grow into their wonderful selves.
